Giostra del Saracino: la storia
La Giostra del saracino è ormai la manifestazione in costume che si identifica con la città di Arezzo. Essa affonda le radici in antichi tornei medievali che si svolsero in città dopo le scorrerie saracene che investirono la Toscana giungendo sino ad Arezzo, risalendo il corso dell’Arno. Di questi tornei restano ricordi e documenti. Ma le giostre ben presto decaddero sino a scomparire completamente nella vita cittadina.

Nel 1931 per iniziativa di un gruppo di appassionati aretini facenti capo alla Brigata dei Monumenti si dette vita nuovamente alla Giostra del Saracino. Lo scopo era quello di dare alla città una manifestazione che la legasse al suo glorioso passato medievale.
In conseguenza di una attenta ricerca storica condotta da A. Bennati si ricercarono antiche manifestazioni sino a scoprire preziosi documenti.

Quali erano i legami storico con il passato? Non è facile dire per quali vie il ricordo delle scorrerie dei saraceni si sia cristallizzato nel folclore popolare. Alle giostre che si svolsero in città nel 1678 risale il più antico regolamento che possediamo: i Capitoli della giostra del Buratto che divennero il documento ispiratore. Su questo si modellò il primo regolamento della nuova giostra.

La giostra si sarebbe dovuta svolgere una volta all’anno nel mese di settembre. Si fecero disegnare i costumi delle comparse rifacendosi a vesti duecentesche e trecentesche; si fissò un severo regolamento per le carriere e per il conteggio dei punti. A Severi compose il testo dell’Inno musicato da G. Pietri.

La prima carriera venne tracciata lungo via di Seteria e i cavalieri spuntavano in piazza da dietro l’abside della medievale Pieve della città.

Per poter affrontare in modo opportuno la nuova tenzone la città venne divisa in quartieri che dopo un iniziale momento di incertezza furono sempre gli stessi. Essi si rifacevano alle antiche divisioni della città medievale: Porta Burgi (quartiere soppresso dopo la prima Giostra), Porta del Foro, Porta crocifera, Porta Santo Spirito, Porta Sant’Andrea. L’entusiasmo manifestato da subito dall’intera cittadinanza fece sì che la manifestazione divenisse la principale della città.

Durante la II guerra mondiale essa venne sospesa e per ben otto anni sino al 1952 la manifestazione non ebbe luogo. La prima edizione ebbe nuovamente vita nel settembre del 1948. Da allora sino ad oggi la manifestazione si è svolta con sempre maggiore successo divenendo uno dei più importanti e seguiti tornei storici di tutta Italia.

The Saracen Joust: history

The Saracen Joust is now the costume display which is identified with Arezzo. Its roots plunge into ancient medieval jousts that took place in the city after the saracen raids assailed Tuscaby reaching Arezzo, going up the flow of the Arno. Memories and documents remain of these jousts. Yet the jousts declined very soon, until they completely disappeared from city life.

In 1931, on the initiative od a group of lovers of Arezzo at the head of the Brigata dei Monumenti (Party of the Monuments), the Saracen Joust was born again. The aim was to give to the city a display that bound it to its glorious medieval past.
As a result of a thorough historical research, which was carried out by A. Bennati, ancient displays were researched until the discovery of precious documents.

Which were the historical ties with the past? It is not easy to say in what ways the memory of the saracen raids crystallized in popular folklore. The most ancient regulations we own date back to the jousts that had place in the city in 1678: the “Capitoli della Giostra del Buratto” (chapters of the joust of Buratto), which became the inspiring document. The first regulations of the new joust were based on this.

The joust should have taken place once a year, on September. The costumes of the walk-ons were designed drawing on thirteenth-century and fourteenth-century dresses; severe rules for the speeds and for the calculation of the points were fixed. A. Severi wrote the lyrics of the hymn, set to music by G. Pietri.

The first speed was traces along via di Seteria and the knights came out in the square from behind the apsis of the medieval parish church of the city (Pieve).

In order to deal with the new contest, the city was divided into quarters that, after an intial moment of uncertainity, remained the same. They went back to the ancient divisions of the medieval city: Porta Burgi (quarter which was abolished after the forst joust), Porta del Foro, Porta Crucifera, Porta Santo Spirito, Porta S. Andrea. The enthusiasm expressed by the whole city since the beginning made sure that the displat became the main one of the city.

During World War II, it was interrupted, and for a good eight years, the display did not take place. The first edition was born again on September 1948. Since then to today the display went off more and more succesfully, becoming one of the most important and followed historical jousts all over Italy.

Die Geschichte des Turniers des Saracino
Das Turnier des Saracino ist die historische Veranstaltung die sich mit der Stadt von Arezzo identifiziert. Der Ursprung dafuer liegt in den alten Turnieren des Mittelalters, die man damals in der Stadt veranstaltete. Sie folgten einer bewegten Zeit in der die Sarazener in die Toskana einfielen und ueber den Arno bis nach Arezzo kamen. Es gibt noch Dokumente und Errinnerungen an diese Turniere, obwohl sie selber recht schnell aus dem Stadtleben verschwanden.

Im Jahre 1931 erweckte eine Gruppe begeisterter Aretiner von der “Brigade der Monumente” das Turnier des Saracino zu neuem Leben. Man wollte der Stadt eine Veranstaltung geben die sie an ihre glorreiche Vergangenheit errinnern wuerde. A. Bennati recherchierte die historischen Hintergruende und fand wichtige Dokumente.

Welche Verbindung gab es mit der Vergangenheit? Es ist schwer zu sagen durch welche Wege sich die Errinnerung an die Sarazenischen Streifzuege in der volkstuemlichen Folklore festgesetzt hat. Die aelteste Regelung die wir haben geht auf das Jahr 1678 zurueck :” Die Kapitel des Turniers des Buratto”. Dieses Dokument inspirierte das heutige Turnier. Das Spiel sollte einmal im Jahr im September stattfinden. Man zeichnete die Kostueme nach Vorlagen echter Trachten aus dem XIII und XIV Jahrhundert. Dann entwarf man ein strenges Protokoll fuer die Laufbahnen der Ritter und fuer das Punktesystem. A. Severi dichtete einen Text fuer die Hymne di G. Pietri komponiert hatte. Die erste Laufbahn wurde entlang der Via de Seteria festgelegt und die Ritter kamen von hinter der mittelalterlichen Kirche der Stadt in die Piazza.

Um den Wettstreit besser zu organisieren wurde die Stadt in Viertel aufgeteilt. Nach anfaenglichem Zoegern blieben sie immer die gleichen. Man hatte sich an den alten Einteilungen der Stadt orientiert. Es waren: “Porta Burgi” (das jedoch nach dem ersten Turnier abgeschafft wurde) dann “Porta del Foro”, ”Porta Crucifera”, ”Porta Santo Spirito” und “Porta Sant’Andrea”.

Die Begeisterung der ganzen Bevoelkerung machte aus diesem Turnier die wichtigste Veranstaltung der Stadt. Waehrend des II Weltkrieges wurde sie fuer acht Jahre ausgesetzt. Die erste fand wieder im September 1948 statt. Seit dem wurde das Turnier des Saracino immer erfolgreicher, und ist heute eines der meistbesuchten Turniere in ganz Italien.
